Fruits, vegetables and salad: The production of plant based food products involves huge amounts of green waste. For a global player in food production in the UK this is no longer a problem since SEEPEX provided a complete system for waste transfer and draining.

Background

Bringing harvested fruits and vegetables into supermarkets requires numerous process steps, including cleaning, hand-sorting, portioning and packaging. This creates a large amount of waste which must be collected in containers and discarded daily.

Task

This large food industry producer formerly used two waste transport systems that created process delays and downtimes.

The first system combined a progressive cavity pump with an open hopper and a low-speed twin-shaft cutting unit. Bridging repeatedly occurred in the macerator inlet causing production stops and downtime.

The second system with a screw compressor and conveyer belts for larger throughput was difficult to clean and hardly met all hygienic requirements.

When we first walked through the plant to have a look, we thought 'There has to be a more efficient and cost-effective way.' So we developed a solution. Peter McGarian
Managing Director, SEEPEX UK Ltd.

Solution

The solution: a turnkey system designed, delivered, installed and commissioned by SEEPEX, performing waste transfer and dewatering.

The heart of the new system are two SEEPEX BTM range pumps with an open hopper, feed screw and integrated cutting blades. A special hopper and feed screw design protects the blades and stator from damage by stones. Heavy solids sink to the bottom of integrated solids separator, while plant waste floats on top and is pumped to the next process step.

The two pumps move the shredded waste into the same pipeline and pass it through a specially designed dewatering section. The compacted and dewatered material is composted, while the water is conducted into the sewage system.

Benefits

That means: Waste dewatering and compaction significantly lowers transport costs, the closed system improves hygiene and effective pump protection reduces replacement part costs.

Once again, SEEPEX proved how custom-made pump systems can eliminate operational problems. The customer benefits from a trouble-free running system which dramatically reduced production downtime and replacement part costs.

Significantly lower costs crucially enhance their competitiveness in the very competitive food market.
